smart car addition to taxi company

Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places. For one smart car owner from Somerset, the lightbulb moment came while on holiday in Morocco.

While many people’s great ideas get lost in the busyness of everyday life, Tony Chinnock was able to put his to good use. Tony is the owner of Shepton Mallet taxi company Chinnock Taxis; his fleet already includes a people carrier and a fancy Mercedes-Benz S-Class complete with free internet dongle for important business types.

But it was during a visit to Morocco where Tony saw the popular ‘petit taxis’ that he had the brainwave to add a small-but-perfectly-formed smart fortwo to his business. He said, “Some people will call me and the idea crazy, but think of the advantages? It’s a tidy vehicle, does 60 miles to the gallon, it’s greener – costs only £35 to fill the tank and has a four out of five star safety rating.”

Sounds like the smart car is good for business as well as the environment, as Tony added, “Whereas a normal taxi will probably charge, say, £40 to Bristol Airport, in the smart it will cost you £10 or £15 less.”

Mr Chinnock already has a bit of previous for being entrepreneurial, with his past career in the TV industry and his taxi website packed with handy tips about popular destinations and a universal phone charger in the cars for en route top ups. So his ideal-for-one-person-journeys smart fortwo is simply the next instalment in his forward-thinking business.

Tony commented, “Will it take off? I guess I’ll soon find out. The smart idea is all about offering a cost-effective, decent service if people want it. I just want to look after people.” Sounds like Tony’s smart is just the ticket!
