In the second year of the Car Run’s sister event┬áThe RAC Future Car Challenge, the famous 60-mile route was used in reverse, with loads of famous car drivers and car lovers taking up the challenge of using the least energy possible.

With plenty of hybrid and electric vehicles ready to rumble, the smart car fortwo electric drive was more than prepared to face the challenge head on, with the director of the RAC Hilary Wilson privately entering her own smart fortwo electric drive.

And Hilary certainly did us proud, bringing home the award for Most Energy Efficient Small Car [Production]. Hooray! Our friend the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell also came up trumps, winning the Most Energy Efficient Light Commercial Vehicle (Production) category.

The list of famous faces taking part in the race included British Formula One legend Damon Hill OBE, TV auto-expert Quentin Willson and renowned F1 designer Gordon Murray, so the zero-emission electric smart was certainly in good company.

The Future Car Challenge started off from Brighton’s Madeira Drive at the ludicrously early time of 7.30am, with the eco-efficient entrants reaching Pall Mall in London just after 10.30am, where they were then part of a dashing parade up to Regent Street. The parade also included the gloriously stylish vehicles from the Veteran Car Run, which helped to draw a 250,000-strong crowd.

At the parade’s presentation ceremony, chairman of The Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee Ben Cussons said, “Once again this has been an excellent event and I want to thank all the drivers and entrants and the many companies who put so much effort into making it a success. It attracted a huge crowd along the route and here at the finish and has once again brought the future of motoring to the attention of the public.” Hear, hear!
